Egyptian Archaeology Course

We advise the students that the “Egyptian Archaeology” course, held by Prof. Wolfram Grajetzki (University College London, visiting professor in Pisa), will start on Monday 19 September. The course is part of the new Master’s Degree programme in English Ancient Egypt and Western Asia: archaeology, history and languages (AEWA).

  • Monday 14.15-15.45, Aula PAO B1
  • Tuesday 8.30-10.00, Aula PAO B1

The course will cover Egyptian archaeology from the Merimde culture (about 4000 BC) up to the Roman Period with a focus on funerary and settlement archaeology and the history of recording methods in Egyptian Archaeology. Selected sites, houses and tombs will be discussed in detail. Next to the more famous sites, such as Gizeh or the Valley of the Kings, less well known places will be presented. Students will learn to approach critically archaeological evidence and how to ‘read’ old excavation reports and archive material. Issues of visibility of age, gender and social identity in the archaeological record will be discussed.
